Funding your studies
How can I support my studies or training at 16+?
You may find that you are eligible for assistance which can range from financial help with costs (fees, materials, travel etc) through to assistance in getting your finances in order and allowing you to budget.
Will I have to pay fees?
No! The government has decided that anyone under the age of 19 at the start of the academic year in which their course begins should not be charged a fee for the whole of their course. This means that your chosen course is free as long as you are aged 18 years or less on 31 August of the calendar year in which it begins.
For example if you start a full-time A-level programme when you are 18, even though you are 19 at the start of the second year, the whole course is still free.
What other costs do I need to know about?
Additional costs vary depending on what you are studying and where you live. Some courses require equipment such as hairdressing and beauty therapy kits, or graphic design/art equipment. Other courses require basic stationery and some books. Ask your tutor what you might need to buy. Assistance with costs
There are a number of ways to get financial assistance depending on your circumstances.
You may be eligible for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
If you are staying on in a Sixth Form, College or on Work-based Training, but not employed as you are training, you may be able to get an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). An EMA is a weekly payment of £30 for young people aged 16-18 who are in full-time learning. Eligibility for this payment is dependent on your parents income.
Full details are available from your Head of Year and your Connexions Personal Advisor.

NOTE: The level of assistance available varies from place to place so it will be best to ask the admissions team at the school, college or work based learning provider for details.
